Choir Curriculum! (all percentage points are subject to change)
Topics/Chapters/Units:
Each year the students will get more in depth with the following concepts:
Music Theory Concepts:
- reading, notating, and performing correct rhythms and pitches
- musical elements, symbols, and concepts
- pitch relationships through sight singing based on solfege
Music Performance Skills:
- posture, tone and vowel quality, good use of breath
- listening, blend, and balance
- style and expression
Student Reflections, Analyses & Compositions:
- listening to and evaluating performances
- analyzing song lyrics and other elements (such as cross-cultural connections) of our repertoire
- improvisation and composition projects
Summative Assessment Grades: (This shall constitute 80% of the trimester grade)
Summative assessments are formal, final assessments that show the end result of long-term student learning.
Chorus summative assessments include:
o Concerts (20%) - Participation is required at all concerts in which your music group is performing. In cases where there is
not a concert held during the trimester, a music project will take its place. (see projects below)
o Concert Review (5%) - A written reflection of the groups' concert performance.
o Quick Quizes (15%) - Related to current curriculum and often center around sight singing and music notation.
o Written Exams (10%) - Exams will include musical symbols, notation and text memory. (2 per trimester)
o Music History/Theory (15%) - Worksheets designed to develop vocabulary and understanding of music in order to become
o Listening Lessons (15%) - ... an educated music consumer in the 21st century.

Participation Grade: (This shall constitute 20% of the trimester grade)
o Preparation – In Choir class, coming prepared means coming with everything you need to be successful in class. This includes a positive attitude, an open mind, and your choir materials such as your folder, journal, pencil, any required work, and water if needed.
o On Task – being on task includes following our class agreements to the code. The basic agreements include mutual respect, attentive listening, right to participate, and appreciations (no put-downs)
o Active Participation – singing your part when asked to do so, following along in your music and using good posture and breathe support to provide the best possible singing!
o Every day is worth 2 points. If a student is disruptive, he or she will lose a point for the day. If asked to stay after class the student will lose both of his or her points.
